Summit Reverb ™

The preliminary designs for the Summit Reverb™ were conceived at a small coffee house with Steve Girardi, guitarist and director of the Summit music Studio in NJ. Steve had just completed his first tasteful set and sat with us having coffee. Steve described his needs for an innovative tube amplifier and asked if I was up to the task.

Summit Reverb

There were several amplifier designs on the bench already but I wanted Steve's amp to be something unique - a true extension of his elegant playing style. Steve went on to say that "the amp has to be full bodied and rich, touch sensitive, have ample power and headroom, be easy to operate and have an excellent reverb. It also has to be relatively compact and be a manageable weight."

And so the project began……………..

Summit Reverb Back View

The Summit Reverb™ is based on a time-tested circuit employing a pair of 6550 vacuum tubes in push-Pull Class A/B using a solid state rectifier with more than ample filtering. This combination allows for incredible headroom and punch as well as fast transient attacks. Guitarists who assisted in the listening tests at our shop said they could hear just about everything. The amp was truly and extension of their instruments and themselves.

The single channel circuit also employs wide range passive tone controls, lush spring reverb, and a master volume feature. The entire circuit is interactive allowing the musician to achieve a wide range of tonalities with only a few simple controls. The sound from the Summit Reverb™ is huge and richly balanced, with the sensitivity immediately apparent.

The exterior of the Summit reverb™ boasts a laser engraved front panel for ease of identification of the various functions. The Ivory chicken head knobs propped against a black background provide the player with instant recognition of settings. Also, to project all the Tone possible, an acoustically transparent grille cloth was used. The interior of the Summit Reverb™ reveals a logical circuit layout utilizing an effective three tier grounding system. Players all commented on the unmatched quietness of this amp. In addition, the circuit was tweaked to provide a "quick response" which works synergistically with the Celestion Vintage NEO driver. Other features include a novel component layout with very short and direct grid feed wires and a DC-referenced filament supply. These features reduce background noise and help keep your guitar signal strong.

Steve Playing"The Pennington Summit Reverb™ is the best amp I've ever owned. The clarity depth and richness of this amp are stunning. I use it playing a free-jazz style, Which simply means the entire tonal spectrum is really challenged. Where in the past I've owned multiple amps to achieve the optimum sound of a certain genre, the Summit reverb™ pretty much does it all. Whether I'm using my Les Paul, Guild Nightbird or my Taylor 812, this amp is outstanding. A really nice feature of the Summit Reverb™ is that it beautifully enhances all of the presets of my guitar processor; although the reverb on this amp is so good it replaced my digital reverb in my processor. There are not a lot of whistles and bells on this amp, but what is standard is a perfectly balanced sound. This is the amp we've all been waiting for."
